Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be able to walk out after the treatment if I walked in? Yes
How Much Does the Mapping Session Cost? $50 for one area
How painful is the treatment? Most patients describe the treatment as causing mild discomfort. We purposely set the energy so that the amount of pain is relatively mild.
How long does the treatment last? Usually about 7 minutes of actual treatment time. We take a history and examine you first before the treatment.
What if I don't like how it feels? After the treatment you will have a full day to decide how you feel. Most people have a decrease in pain and an improvement in function that is immediate during and after the treatment. Some people will notice improvement over the next few hours. Any improvement even for a few minutes correlates with a good biological response and a reasonable expectation of a return to better function and decreased pain.
What percent of people decide to continue with the full program after the mapping session? More than 85%.
Can I be treated for more than one area at the same visit? Yes.
How Often Are the Treatments? We recommend twice a week for the first 2 to 3 weeks and then weekly after then, depending on the number of treatments the patient starts with. However some patients who drive a distance have very good results with just once a week or even less frequent but the response is slower.
How Many Sessions Are Usually Part of the Treatment Program? We recommend at least 10 sessions for the average person to maximize restoration of function.
What else is done besides the Shockwave Treatment? We do red light therapy with a multi frequency NIR (Near Infrared) device. We offer vibration plate therapy. We offer instruction in low inflammation eating. We teach Chi Walking for biomechanical retraining.
Why is the treatment called shockwave? Will I be shocked? No you will not be shocked and it is a term applied to technology first developed to treat kidney stones but has been fine tuned to treat soft tissue and joint pain for the last 20 years. There is a spark in water that is not touching the patient. This produces a wave of energy that is directed at the patient which is usually felt as a mild tapping sensation.
Are there any Contraindications? Yes. We would not do the treatment close to a pacemaker but as long as it is 12 inches away it is safe. We do not treat over an area of active infection unless the infection is Lyme disease which can be directly treated. We do not treat somebody who is in the active phase of systemic chemotherapy.
Medical Disclaimer
Individual responses to treatment vary. Not everybody experiences improvement in pain or function.. The purpose of the mapping session is to improve our accuracy in giving you advice. If you do not respond during the introductory mapping session we will discourage further treatment. It is possible that you will not feel better from the treatment. The acoustic energy used in the treatment is intended to stimulate biological responses in the treated tissues. However, the degree to which an individual experiences pain relief or functional improvement varies from person to person.
